I know I can't be the only person on my flist who spotted the ST:TNG reference on last night's episode. First person to put it in the comments gets a cookie.

I thought I'd share a new web comic I'm enjoying. Link goes to the first strip in the archive.

11:27 am - Roadtrip to England, anyone?
Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich is now the owner of a drill bit that's 60 feet wide. As you'll see behind the link, there is speculation that he might use it to dig a to-be-proposed auto tunnel beneath the Bering Strait.
At first, I thought this was an April Fool item, but the links to earlier news reports suggest there might be something to it. Bloomberg carried a story about the idea last year.

10:43 pm - Quickie TV review
Anyone else surprised that Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has, so far, been a decent show? Summer Glau still seems like too much of an automaton, and the guy playing John has been barely distinguishable from an extra (though, to be fair, he hasn't been given much to do yet). Lena Headey, on the other hand, has been great. More importantly, it only took them about three episodes to establish the franchise's trademark sense of constant dread. TiVo season pass: enabled.

If the proposed deal described here is accurate, then Omar Minaya's got naked pictures of Carl Pohlad or someone in his family.

In light of the enormous drag it's causing on global productivity, I've decided that the only ethical thing to do is end my lyrics quiz early. Answers behind the link.

03:38 pm - E pluribus unum
You know what someone needs to invent? A flash storage aggregator. A device that allows you to plug in all your miscellaneous jump drives and organize them as a single logical disk. It would be the size of a small Kleenex box. The top and three sides would be packed with standard USB ports to accept the drives. The other side would have power, 10/100 Ethernet, Firewire, and two more USB slots meant to accept Bluetooth and/or WiFi dongles. The ROM would let the chief user configure basic permissions, RAID-like functionality, hot-swapping, etc.
It would be pretty slow, and it wouldn't be something you'd use for mission critical applications (obviously). But if they were affordable, I think people would buy them.
Something I thought of while pondering all the free jump drives Heather receives as swag. Gotta put those things to work.

Hanging around in the front bushes. There was a mate, too, but I think I scared it off. This one split a moment after I snapped the photo.

A few days before Christmas, I made this throwaway comment on

Very still, very cold. No longjohns, and no meteors. And though I figured I'd be up anyhow, Maeve is actually sleeping...so I could have been getting some shuteye. Meh.

05:08 pm - Touching nerves at the NYT
Today, the New York Times congratulated itself on its new skyscraper in midtown Manhattan.
My comments were moderated out of the comment thread. The NYT says that comments "generally will be posted if they are on-topic and not abusive." I don't think I was off-topic, so I must assume I was "abusive."
( Because the world deserves to benefit from my wit and wisdom, I've reproduced my comment in full here. )

11:39 am - Birdwatcher bloodlust
In other news, I don't believe for a moment that this guy was primarily interested in saving endangered birds. There were other ways to eliminate the presence of the cat. Outside of life & death situations, e.g., a hungry bear emerging from the woods to menace your toddler in your backyard, there are always other ways. Truth: the guy had a gun and seized upon what he regarded as a nominally defensible opportunity to kill something with it. Happens all the time...but most target practice animals don't have a human advocate. Tough luck, buddy.
